We can take a look at using contain which will scale down the image to fit the parent size. This means you will get black bars on the top or bottom, depending on the image aspect ratio, would that work?

yes that would be nice. I guess long-term alternative is to be able to change the container itself to also be 1:1 but this is more complicated

Or support any ratio, and convert it to something that fits the 16:9 space in Ayon gui.
Because currently, if you use anything else than 16:9 thumbnails, it is heavily distorted in the gui.
